Before You Go

Suggestions to Bring the Following

  1. Beach/Pool towels
  2. Sunscreen
  3. Mosquito repellent - There are a lot of mosquitos in the Tofo/Tofinho area especially during the summer months. Please make sure you are well prepared.

Optional (for groups of 6+ people in the big house):

  1. Sleeping Cushions - For larger groups a few extra cushions might be worthwhile. There are more than enough, but some might be getting a bit flat.
  2. Chairs/Campmasters - Once again only for larger groups. Here is the current seating arrangement:
  1. Extension cords + Multi Plugs - There are several but you can never have enough.

On The Road

All information from DriveMoz comes highly recommended. If your documentation and other requirements are in order and you are on the Zello app and follow all instructions, it's almost impossible that you will have any problems while on the road.

  1. Follow facebook.com/groups/DriveMoz for the latest on everything regarding the border and traveling to and from your destination.
  1. Download the Zello Walkie Talkie App (Google Android | Apple) and join the "DriveMoz" channel. Any issues on the road like breakdowns or police taking chances, just call in and someone will immediately assist. (Note a Moz sim card + data balance, both which can be obtained from the DriveMoz online store, should be active.)
  1. Get DriveMoz stickers to be placed on the driver side mirror and back of the car. Police and other officials are well familiar with DriveMoz by now and much less likely to give you issues when seeing the sticker and knowing that you are part of the team.
  1. bit.ly/m/DriveMoz-Crucial-Need-to-Know - Handy links for everything you might need at the border and on the road (Stickers, 3rd Party Insurance, Sim Cards, Triangles, Tips & Tricks, etc).

At The Border Post

Trucks Queuing

Do not be concerned about trucks queuing on the left sometimes for many kilometers before the Lebombo border. Just pass them on the right. This sometimes means you will have to drive into the oncoming traffic lane. Turn on hazard lights and proceed carefully.

Required Documents

  1. Valid Driver's License
  2. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the return date with 2 open pages.
  3. If staying up to 30 days then no Visa is required for South African or other SADC passport holders.
  4. Vehicle Registration Papers (RC1). If your vehicle is financed you need a certified copy of the registration papers plus a permission letter from the bank authorizing you to take the vehicle across the border.
  5. 2 x Red Triangles
  6. 2 x Reflective Vest
  7. ZA Sticker (if you are using a South African vehicle)
  8. Trailer Blue/Yellow Triangle Sticker (if applicable)
  9. Registration papers for trailers (if applicable)
  10. A fire-extinguisher is always a good idea but not a requirement for normal passenger vehicles. If an official asks for one and you do not have one just tell them politely that it is not a requirement for normal vehicles.
Note: Please double check as these requirements may change from time to time.

South African Side

Simply go to immigration with your passport. All persons should be present when passports are stamped. Nothing else is required on the SA side.

Mozambique Side

  1. Get a gate pass from an official as you enter the Mozambican side.
  2. The driver of the vehicle must go to Customs (on the left hand side just as you enter the building). Hand in your vehicle (and trailer) Registration Papers to an official who will hand you back a Temporary Import Permit (TIP) to be signed. The form is automatically filled at Ressano Garcia or filled by driver at other border posts. Confirm details have been captured correctly.
  3. Proceed to immigration to have all passports stamped.
  4. Get a customs officer in blue uniform (who might want to inspect the contents of your vehicle) to sign your gate pass.
  5. Proceed to the exit and hand in your gate pass.
  6. Do not stop for several km after the exit gate as it is considered a crime area. There might be individuals in reflective jackets trying to pose as officials trying to pull you over. Do not stop and just drive past them. Reflective jackets or similar do not identify officials. They can always be recognised by their uniform.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A MOZ ENTRY STAMP BEFORE DEPARTING THE BORDER!

Getting to the House

The best option is to GPS navigate to Casa Paradiso: maps.app.goo.gl/GLqKPzrorSE4hdEYA

You can also search for "Casa Paradiso Tofo" on Google Maps.

The first (yellow) road to the right is the fastest and best way to get there but maybe tricky for smaller cars. It used to be more of a 4x4 road but nowadays most 2x4 vehicles drive there (it's a bit of a test and see situation if you have a 2x4). The alternative road is indicated in green in the map below.

Note: The roads change from time to time. At time of writing the blue route changed to 4x4 and the yellow one is now 2x4 accessible. If both are inaccessible there is a 3rd very slow and rocky but stable one in between the 2 indicated on the map. [Map image placeholder - see content/images/]

The oven, stove and barbeque is gas powered. Should any run out just ask Pedro to exchange with the full one that is on standby at the house.

Internet/WiFi

Fast uncapped Starlink Internet + Wifi is available. Note that after a power failure, the Starlink dish takes a few minutes to orient itself again with satellites (up to 15 mins for full stabilization).

WiFi SSID: Casa Paradiso WiFi Password: Tofo2020! PLEASE DO NOT SHARE THE PASSWORD WITH ANYONE OUTSIDE YOUR HOUSEHOLD

You can also load relatively cheap data bundles on your smartphone (ask Pedro if you need a sim card from the market) in case of power failure or outside of wifi reception.

General

The house is fully equipped for self-catering (including linen). You are only required to bring your own personal clothes, beach towels and belongings. Please do not use the bathroom towels at the pool or on the beach.

Mosquitoes/Malaria

Please take proper precautions with regards to lotions, clothing, etc. Mosquitoes are most active a few hours starting at sunset and again for an hour just before sunrise.

Most of Mozambique is a relatively high risk area for malaria. If you feel it necessary, speak to your GP or travel clinic about prophylactic medicine. Should you experience any fever, chills, headache, sweat, body aches, or any other flu-like symptoms (especially if it comes and goes in waves) visit Mopani Pharmacy next to Spar for a test. Should you test positive, the pharmacy has very effective medication provided on the spot.

Always keep mosquito nets over beds closed, even during daytime. Make sure the opening is properly closed with washing pins. Consider spraying a bit of Doom inside the nets an hour or so before going to bed. Ceiling and standing fans are a very effective way to deter mosquitos. Keep room doors and windows closed after sunset (this includes the main sleeping room even though its open on top as mosquitoes always prefer flying as low as possible).

Fire Hazard

The house is in a high risk fire area due to the relative proximity of the houses and the construction material used. No fires or flames of any kind are allowed (including candles). The only exceptions are the gas stove, oven and barbeque.
